About Me

My name is Micaiah Abts.  I have enjoyed sports and fitness training since my youth.  While I was never the best athlete or the best at any given sport, I worked hard daily to close the gap between me and those who were better.  I have continued to learn and improve as I've grown older.  As an athlete and coach I am constantly on the lookout for ways to do things better, more efficiently, and more productively.  I take a thoughtful approach to rigorous work.

Not counting Club Wrestling and Clinics, I have over 50 seasons of experience coaching wrestling, football, lacrosse, and strength/conditioning at the modified and varsity levels.  I have learned not just from the experience itself, but from the wisdom of some tremendous coaches with whom I have had the privilege to work.

I have been a part of bad teams, building teams, and dynasties.  I have learned to use my energy and enthusiasm to build the confidence and abilities of my charges, no matter their beginning level of ability.  I have seen enough progress and growth from unlikely individuals to believe this: NO MATTER YOUR BEGINNING LEVEL, IF YOU ARE WILLING TO WORK YOU WILL IMPROVE.

Read much more about my thoughts and beliefs on the Philosophy page.

Ben is short and densely muscled. Rumor has it he can bench 300 pounds. Mikey is long and lean, and worked out twice a week throughout the season with me. Yeah, regularly lifting the day of/before matches. This is their Sectional semi-final match. How many times does Mikey lift return Ben? And how easily does Mikey cut and clear when Ben has a chance to return him?

There is a difference between being muscular and having great functional strength!

Lots of gyms have heavy bags.  Yours probably does too.  Having a piece of equipment doesn't make the gym special, people using that equipment make the gym special.  When I was looking at colleges, their promotional materials listed the number of volumes in their libraries -what's the difference between a library with 1 million volumes and one with 1.5 million volumes?  Nobody is ever going to use the vast majority of them!

We use the heavy bag, because it's a great conditiong tool.
